Safety and Use Terms

Last updated: 8 October 2026

These terms explain how to use SoyCandleLab products safely. By buying or using our products you agree to follow them. They sit alongside our Shipping, Returns and Privacy policies and do not limit your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

Essential Oils & Aromatherapy

Our essential-oil creations are made with carefully selected aromatic ingredients to bring beautiful natural fragrance and moments of mindfulness into your day. Essential oils are highly concentrated natural substances and should always be used as directed.

Please:

  • Follow the instructions provided for each individual product.
  • Keep essential oils away from the eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Do not ingest essential oils.
  • Do not apply products directly to the skin unless they are specifically formulated and labelled for topical use.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • If you have sensitive skin, perform a patch test before using a topical product.
  • Discontinue use if irritation or discomfort occurs.
  • Store products away from excessive heat and direct sunlight.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have allergies, asthma, a medical condition or concerns about using essential oils, we recommend speaking with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional before use.

Essential oils, fragrances, smoke and some botanicals may not be suitable for animals. Please keep candles, essential oils, Palo Santo, sage and other aromatic products safely away from pets and ensure pets are not exposed to concentrated smoke or oils. If you are unsure whether a particular product is suitable around your pet, please seek advice from your veterinarian.

1. General

1.1 SoyCandleLab products are hand poured or hand made in small batches in Melbourne, Australia. Small variations in colour, shape, texture, fragrance strength and surface finish are natural and are not faults.

1.2 Our products are for personal home use only. They are not medicines or therapeutic goods and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Aromatherapy descriptions (for example Mind, Body, Spirit, Mindfulness, Energise, Spirituality, Harmony, Soothe, Purify) describe the mood of a blend, not a medical outcome.

1.3 Keep all products out of reach of children and pets (see section 1A). Do not eat or drink any product.

1.4 Read the label and these terms before first use. If you are unsure whether a product suits you, do not use it.

1A. Pets and animals

1A.1 Essential oils, fragrances, candle and incense smoke, and some botanicals may not be suitable for animals. Cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, reptiles, fish and other small animals can be far more sensitive than people to essential oils, fragrance, smoke and fine particles, and some can be harmed by them, even in small amounts.

1A.2 Keep all candles, soaps, oils, rollers, sprays, balms, wands and botanicals (including dried petals, rosebuds and palo santo) out of reach of pets. Do not let animals lick, chew or eat any product, wax, wick or packaging.

1A.3 Do not apply our oils, rollers, balms or sprays to animals, and do not spray near them. Do not burn candles or wands in a small or closed room where an animal is, and always leave the room open so an animal can leave. Birds are especially sensitive to fragrance and smoke: keep them well away from burning candles and sprays.

1A.4 If an animal shows signs of distress (drooling, vomiting, coughing, trouble breathing, wobbling, lethargy, itching or skin irritation), remove it from the area, ventilate the room, stop using the product and contact your vet immediately, or the Animal Poisons Helpline (1300 869 738 in Australia). Take the product label with you.

1A.5 If you are unsure whether a product is suitable around your pet, ask your vet before use.

2. Candles (soy, beeswax and pillar candles)

Before you light

2.1 Place the candle on a flat, stable, heat-resistant surface, away from edges, draughts, fans, air vents, curtains, paper and anything flammable. Keep at least 10 cm clear on all sides and 1 m clear above.

2.2 Trim the wick to about 5 mm before every burn. For timber (crackling) wicks, trim any charred or loose pieces before lighting. Remove the lid, any packaging, labels, tags, twine and decorations (including bee charms and hanging tags) before lighting. Never burn a candle with a tag or twine attached.

While burning

2.3 Never leave a burning candle unattended. Never burn a candle while you sleep or leave the room.

2.4 Burn for long enough that the wax melts across the full surface (usually 2 to 3 hours for jar candles) to avoid tunnelling, but do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time. Let the candle cool and set fully before relighting.

2.5 Keep the flame away from children, pets, and anything that can catch fire. Do not move a burning or hot candle. Do not touch the jar while burning or until completely cool. Jars, lids and the surface beneath can become very hot.

2.6 Do not burn a candle near other burning candles closer than 10 cm, as this can cause overheating.

2.7 Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris. Do not use any liquid to put out a flame.

2.8 Extinguish the flame using a snuffer, or gently dip the wick into the wax pool and straighten it. Avoid blowing it out, which can scatter hot wax or smoke. Keep out of draughts while burning, which can cause sooting and uneven burning.

Stop using the candle if

2.9 The flame becomes too high, flickers excessively or smokes. Extinguish it, let it cool, trim the wick and relight.

2.10 Less than about 1 cm of wax remains in the jar, or the jar looks cracked, chipped or discoloured. Do not burn the candle further.

2.11 Never use a jar that is cracked or chipped. Do not pour hot wax down a drain.

Jars, lids and reuse

2.12 Bamboo lids are for extinguished, cool candles only. Never place a lid on a burning candle. Do not use the lid as a coaster for hot items.

2.13 If you reuse the jar, make sure it is completely cool and clean it carefully. Remove all remaining wax with care. Jars are not designed for use with food, drink or in an oven or microwave.

Beeswax pillar and shaped candles

2.14 Place pillar and shaped candles (including swirl, lotus, knitted, honey bubble, geometric pear, floral, peony and rose flower styles) on a heat-proof holder or plate that is larger than the base. Never burn them on wood, plastic, glass that is not heat-proof, or bare surfaces.

2.15 Beeswax candles can develop a pale, powdery surface ("bloom"). This is natural and does not affect performance. Wipe gently with a soft cloth if desired.

2.16 Shaped candles are decorative and burn differently to jar candles. Stop burning when the flame is within 5 cm of the base or any decorative detail, and never leave them burning near the edge of the shape.

Fragrance and wellbeing

2.17 Our candles use fragrance and essential oil blends. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have asthma, allergies, sensitive skin, or a respiratory condition, check with your health practitioner before use and ventilate the room well. Stop using the candle if you feel unwell, headachy or irritated.

2.18 Burn candles in a well-ventilated room. Do not burn candles in small closed spaces. Some fragrances may be unsuitable around birds and small pets. Keep pets away from burning candles and wax.

Wick trimmers and accessories

2.19 Use a wick trimmer only on a cool, unlit candle. Always dispose of trimmings safely, not into the wax pool.

3. Soaps (goat's milk and coconut milk soaps)

3.1 For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. If soap gets in your eyes, rinse thoroughly with clean water. If irritation continues, seek medical advice.

3.2 Our soaps are made with natural ingredients, which may include coconut milk, goat's milk, coconut oil, cocoa butter, castor oil, aloe vera, essential oils and botanicals such as calendula, lavender, rose petals, black seed and charcoal. Check the ingredient list on the product page and label before use. Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredient, including milk, tree nuts or coconut.

3.3 Patch test first: wash a small area of skin and wait 24 hours. Stop using the soap if redness, itching or irritation occurs.

3.4 Keep soap on a draining soap dish and out of standing water. This keeps the soap firmer and lets it last longer. Store away from direct sunlight and heat.

3.5 Natural soaps may vary in colour and scent over time. Petals, rosebuds and botanicals on top are decorative and may come away in use. Do not eat them.

3.6 Remove the paper sleeve before use. Keep soap out of reach of children, who may mistake it for food.

3.7 Not suitable for babies under 12 months unless advised by your health practitioner.

4. Essential oil rollers, blends, sprays and balms

4.1 Rollers and oil blends (for example Harmony, Soothe and Purify) are for external use only. They contain essential oils in a carrier of coconut oil and sweet almond oil. Do not use if you have a nut or coconut allergy.

4.2 Always patch test on a small area of skin 24 hours before first use. Do not apply to broken, irritated or sunburnt skin. Avoid the eyes, inner ears, lips, genital area and any mucous membranes. If contact occurs, apply a little carrier oil (such as olive or coconut oil) to the area, then wash with mild soap and water. Seek medical advice if irritation continues.

4.3 Apply to pulse points such as the wrists, temples (avoiding the eye area), back of neck or soles of the feet. Use a small amount only. More is not better.

4.4 Do not use essential oils internally. Do not swallow. Essential oils can be harmful if swallowed. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting; call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 (Australia) or 000 in an emergency.

4.5 Pregnancy, breastfeeding and medical conditions: seek advice from your health practitioner before using essential oils if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, epileptic, have asthma, a skin condition, high blood pressure, or take medication. Some oils (for example peppermint, rosemary, cedarwood, myrrh, and others) are not recommended in pregnancy or for certain conditions.

4.6 Children and pets: Do not use on babies or young children unless advised by a qualified practitioner. Keep rollers and oils out of the reach of children. Many essential oils are toxic to cats, dogs, birds and other pets. Do not apply to or spray near animals, and keep pets away from diffusers, sprays and oils.

4.7 Citrus oils (such as bergamot, orange and lemon) can make skin sensitive to sunlight. Avoid direct sun on the area for 12 hours after applying products that contain them.

4.8 Keep oils away from flames. Essential oils and carrier oils are flammable. Do not use near open flames, heaters or while smoking. Wash your hands after use and before touching your eyes. Keep the lid on tightly after use.

4.9 Palo santo spray, cleansing wands and similar items: use in a ventilated space. Do not spray on lit candles or flames. Do not spray onto polished or delicate surfaces, fabric or artwork without testing first. Burning any wand or smudge item must only be done in a heat-proof dish, never unattended and kept away from flammable items.

4.10 Tallow balm and eye serum: for external use only. Patch test before first use. Do not use if allergic to any ingredient. Avoid direct contact with the eyes unless the product is specifically labelled for the eye area, and discontinue use if irritation occurs.

4.11 Store in a cool, dark place out of direct sunlight, and away from heat. Use within the period shown on the label, or within 12 months of opening. Natural oils can separate or change slightly in colour over time.

5. Gift boxes and sets (including the Aroma Therapy Trio)

5.1 Remove all packaging, lids, tags and decorative items before burning any candle in a set. Do not burn candles while they are in the box. The box, card and inner packaging are flammable.

5.2 Each candle in a set should be used following the candle safety instructions in section 2.

6. Storage and handling

6.1 Store candles, soaps and oils in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat sources and cars. Heat can cause wax to sweat or oils to degrade.

6.2 Candles can arrive with minor surface marks, frosting or small wax flaws. This is a natural feature of soy wax and does not affect safety or burning.

7. Allergens and ingredients

7.1 Our products may contain or have been made in a place that handles tree nuts (sweet almond), coconut, milk (goat's milk), beeswax, essential oils and fragrance. Full ingredient information is on each product page or label. If you have an allergy or sensitivity, contact us before purchase.

7.2 Products are not tested on animals.

8. Responsibility

8.1 You are responsible for using products as directed and as described in these terms. SoyCandleLab is not responsible for loss, damage or injury caused by misuse, failure to follow these instructions, leaving a candle unattended, or use contrary to a label or warning.

8.2 Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any right or remedy, or any guarantee, condition or warranty, that you have under the Australian Consumer Law or other law that cannot be excluded. Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage, and to have goods repaired or replaced if they fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.

8.3 If a product arrives damaged or you have a problem with it, stop using it and contact us with your order number and photos so we can help.
